Where Are Your Treaures?

by: Jack Holbrook | 07.17.10

In preparing for our sermon this week I was struck by one simple axiom: The heart fixes itself on that which its labors to possess. In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus reminds us that we are creatures of desires and lusts and what our heart lusts after it usually gets. Which is why Jesus gives us this one command: Lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven and not on earth. The reason is simply: Treasures of earth will either become outdated and useless, broken, destroyed in some way or stolen. And if perhaps a treasure somehow manages to escape these forces of nature one thing is for sure - you will not be able to take them with you when you die. As the old proverbial saying goes, “You’ve never seen a u-haul carried behind a hearse” and for go reason - You can’t take it with you. Jesus teaches us that we must invest our time, talents, and treasures in those things which will last for all eternity: the Word of God and the soul of men. To that end may we labor.
