Why Scripture Matters

by: Jack Holbrook | 11.30.09

In preparing for this week’s sermon (The Temptation of Christ: Matt 4:1-11) I was reminded that when Christ Himself was tempted to sin His defense was not positive thinking, not avoiding the issue, not running to self help books or even people for that matter. Christ instead quoted Scripture and reminded Himself of God’s Truth. If the Son of God’s defense against sin was to use Scripture to think biblical about the temptation can I do any less? Joshua 1:8 instructs the believer to “Not let this book of the Law (a.k.a. God’s Word) depart from his mouth. Rather he was to meditate on it day and night to be careful to do EVERYTHING written in it.” Psalm 119:9-11 tells us that a young man can keep his way pure by living according to God’s Word; he hid it in his heart so that he might not sin against God. So if Christ avoiding sinning by applying Scripture to His life can I do any less? As the old saying goes, “GIGO - Garbage In - Garbage Out” so let be purposeful in saturating our minds with God’s Word!
